Direct Word Recognition English (and most of the world's languages) is a phonetic writing. In English, a character in writing form expresses its pronunciation, but it does not mean its meaning. Chinese characters are freehand. The glyphs of Chinese characters are both phonetic and ideographic, and their ideographic functions are especially obvious.
